BEFORE

BEFORE

The room didn’t need a huge amount of work to transform it. The key things we did was paint the whole room, replace the ceiling fan, replace the flooring and introduce some VJ panelling behind the bed, along with install two wall lights. Plus the new furniture and window furnishings made the whole space come to life.

AFTER

FLOORING

In our cottage the bedroom formerly had carpet. Whilst it looked like it was in ok condition it was actually very musty-smelling, and had to go as it was stinking out the whole cottage. Not only that I don’t think carpet is particularly practical for an Airbnb - especially one in the country as it can get muddy out there when it rains. I wanted flooring that was practical and easy to clean so I chose the ‘Aspen’ hybrid flooring in Tassie Oak from Carpet Court. I had narrowed down my selections at their Caloundra showroom, before deciding on this particular one when viewing the sample in the cottage. It just had a lovely warmth to the tones in it and I knew it would work well with our Modern Farmhouse vibe that I wanted to achieve.

The installer who came out to inspect our floors before install found that our bedroom was actually a little unlevel in some spots so he suggested to flood the floor with self-levelling concrete to give us a solid foundation to work with for the hybrid flooring. We are just so happy with the it - everything went smoothly - from the initial measure up to the install.

BEDDING

I wanted a more creamier colour palette for the bedroom bedding to go with our off-white walls and chose Linen House’s new ‘Connie’ natural cotton/linen quilt cover set and Connie European pillowcases. We have a queen size bed but for the quilt I’ve gone up a size to the King - to ensure it covers our mattress properly (IYKYK)! I’ve paired it with Linen House’s Terra Snow sheet set (GOTS-Certified Organic Stonewashed Cotton Percale). The sheets feel soft against your skin - I know our guests are just going to love them too.

And to top it off I have used Linen House’s ‘Maya’ moss cushion and throw. They’re actually a perfect match for our green bedhead. I love how fresh the bedding all looks together, it really has brought the whole room to life. Even our gorgeous vase is from Linen House!

MATTRESS + BASE

I think in any accommodation, it’s super important to get the foundations right - a good mattress and base could be the difference in getting positive or negative reviews! I know everyone’s different in terms of bed preference so I thought I’d go for something middle of the road and chose the Superior Sleep (medium) mattress from Pure Sleep.

My partner and I have tested it out for a night as I wanted to make sure it’s comfortable. And I’m happy to say yes it is comfy, and the base is great too - no squeaking. We regularly toss and turn in the night, so I’m glad it’s ticked that box and super quiet - I don’t think I felt him move during the night either. The medium is probably leaning a little more towards firm feeling so if you like something softer the soft might be better suited to you or have it topped with a mattress topper. I am finding as I get older I need more support in a mattress, so firmer is better than softer (for me personally anyways).

All of Pure Sleep’s mattresses and bases are made to order, so you can choose from soft, medium and firm, and you can even customise the fabric on the base and the height of the mattress too. My particular mattress can be flipped to keep it fresh.

WINDOW COVERINGS

This room has two windows and a set of french doors, so it required a lot of window coverings! For the window above the bed I’ve chosen plantation shutters from Tuiss Blinds Online - mainly for aesthetic purposes, they look beautiful and as it’s in a key spot (above the bed) I think this option just looks nicer than a roller blind (and a Roman blind would have covered too much of the height of the window), plus it suits the modern farmhouse aesthetic.

For the French Doors and other window I’ve paired electric roller blinds (in Titan Alabaster) with beautiful S-Fold Madagascar sheer neutral curtains that run the whole length of both walls and all the way to the ceiling (which I always like to do as it looks more high-end and hotel-like). The way they filter the light just makes the whole room look so ethereal during the day. It really does make the space feel like a sanctuary.

LIGHTING

I wanted to introduce another source of lighting in the bedroom (apart from the downlights) to create a softer atmosphere at night. I had been eyeing these ‘Ray’ wall lights on Temple & Webster’s website for a while and so glad I got them! They seem like great quality and I like the fact that you can adjust the angle of the wall lights with the side lever. They really are the perfect wall sconce for a country bedroom. I even used the same lights in our kitchen renovation. They come in a black option too for those wanting something moodier.

FURNITURE

As this bedroom isn’t very wide, I needed narrow side tables to fit the space. I also wanted something more classic looking and fell in love with the ‘Evie’ bedside table from Rekindle Design Co (who happens to be based in the Maleny area too)! I love that we’ve used a local businesses furniture in this space. Plus the size, colour and design just fits perfectly in here.

PAINT

One of the ways we gave this room a freshen up is with a new coat of paint. What a difference that can make! We repainted the ceiling, skirting and architraves in Tint Paint ‘So Fresh and So Clean’, and for the walls I went with a warmer white - this is Tint Paint’s ‘Old School’ and it’s a lovely creamy warm white. It gives the whole room a soft glow and I now wish I painted the entire cottage with it. It’s such a beautiful white.

For our VJ panelling behind the bed, I’ve gone with the colour Dulux ‘Lush Hosta’ which Tint Paint has colour matched. They can colour match any brand of paint in fact. I love that you order online and have it delivered. We live in a rural area, so having things delivered just saves us so much time!
